Light rain likely in capital today, AQI stays moderate

New Delhi: Isolated light rain was recorded in southwest Delhi on Friday, with Palam registering 5.3mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. In the 24 hours leading up to 8.30 am on Friday, light rain was reported in parts of east and central Delhi, with Mayur Vihar receiving 0.5mm and Lodhi Road recording a ‘trace’ amount of rain.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the impact of a prevailing western disturbance will continue until Saturday, with very light rain expected during the day. “Scattered light rain is likely in Delhi NCR late on Friday night and on Saturday. From Sunday, no rain is expected, but cloud cover will persist,” said an IMD official. No colour-coded alert is expected from Saturday onwards.

So far, Delhi has recorded 77.8mm of rainfall for the month, with 77mm falling on a single day, May 2, marking the second-highest single-day rainfall for May ever, according to the IMD. Weather analysts indicated that the western disturbance is weakening, and rain chances will diminish after Saturday. However, temperatures are expected to rise next week, though they will remain below 40°C.

On Friday, Delhi’s maximum temperature was 36.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, compared to 37.3 degrees Celsius the previous day. Forecasts indicate that temperatures will range between 36 degrees Celsius and 39 degrees Celsius over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality showed improvement over past 24 hours.
